NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On May 29, 2013, about 0810 UTC, a Piper PA28R, US registration N68XM, operated by a private pilot, impacted terrain near the Gap Aerodrome, France. The pilot made a distress call to ATC reporting a fire on board about 30 minutes after takeoff from Gap Tallard, LFNA (GAT). The general aviation cross country flight's intended destination was Bale Mulhouse, France, LFSB (MLH). The pilot, who was the sole occupant, was fatally injured. The Bureau d'Enquetes et d'Analyses (BEA) of France is investigating the accident. As the State of Manufacture of the airplane and engines, the NTSB has designated a non-traveling U.S. accredited representative to assist the BEA in its investigation.
