NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On September 1, 2013, approximately 1045 eastern daylight time, an Aeronca 65CA, N31915, was substantially damaged during a precautionary landing after takeoff in Hardwick, Vermont. The certificated private pilot and passenger were seriously injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the flight. The personal flight was conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91.   The pilot stated to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector that a pre-takeoff check of the engine revealed no anomalies. Shortly after takeoff from the private farm field, at an altitude around 300 feet, the engine began to “sputter.” The pilot maneuvered the airplane back towards the field to land, and during the landing, the airplane impacted trees, resulting in substantial damage to the forward fuselage and left wing.   Examination of the engine was scheduled for a later date.
