NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On October 15, 2013, about 1451 CDT, a Spirit Airlines Airbus A319, N516NK, equipped with two International Aero Engines (IAE) V2524-A5 engines experienced a No. 1 engine failure during climb out from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) Dallas, TX. The flight crew reported that shortly after takeoff, at approximately FL190 they received an Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitor (ECAM) No. 1 engine pressure ratio (EPR) fault, N2 over limit warning and exhaust gas temperature (EGT) over limit warning. Approximately three minutes later an audible bang sound was heard followed by a No. 1 engine fire warning. The crew declared an emergency, shut down the engine and discharged one of the fire bottles. The airplane returned to DFW and executed a safe landing. Fire emergency crews met the aircraft on the runway and confirmed that there were no indications of a fire. Ground crews performed a visual examination of the engine and reported extensive damage to the low pressure turbine (LPT). The engine thrust reverser cowls were opened and large sections of the low pressure turbine and turbine exhaust cases were missing. The flight was being operated in accordance with 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 121 as a regularly scheduled flight from DFW to Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport (ATL), Atlanta, GA.
