NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On October 21, 2013, about 0800 mountain daylight time, a Cessna 172M, N80257, experienced engine roughness while in cruise flight, about 5 miles northwest of Hardin, Montana. The airplane was registered to and operated by the pilot under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. The commercial pilot sustained minor injuries and was the sole person on board. The airplane sustained substantial damage during the forced landing. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The personal flight departed Broadus Airport, Broadus, Montana, at about 0730, with a planned destination of Billings Logan International Airport, Billings, Montana. The pilot reported engine roughness while in cruise flight at about 1,500 feet, above ground level, and performed an emergency landing in a field. The pilot further reported that during the landing, a gust of wind caused an abnormal landing and resulted in a nose over. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the engine firewall. The airplane was recovered to secure storage facility for further examination.
