NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On October 5, 2013, about 1600 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 172F, N8715U, operated by a private individual, was substantially damaged when it impacted terrain while making a forced landing near Gainesville, Florida. The commercial pilot and passenger received minor injuries. The flight departed Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV), Gainesville, Florida about 1540. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The banner tow flight was conducted under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. According to the pilot, after his third circuit around the stadium about 1,200 feet above ground level (agl), he noticed the airplane had descended about 100 feet so he increased engine power. He then checked the engine gauges and observed the engine oil temperature increasing. The engine stopped producing power shortly after the pilot observed the engine oil temperature reach its maximum limit. The pilot reported there was no hesitation, roughness, or any signs of mechanical failure prior to the loss of engine power. After his first attempt to restart the engine was unsuccessful, the pilot decided to release the banner about 850 feet agl. He attempted to restart the engine two more times and about 500 feet agl the pilot selected an open field for a forced landing. The airplane overflew about three-fourths of the field and touched down at approximately 65 knots. After touchdown, the airplane bounced back into the air before it struck a chain link fence and a parked truck. Postaccident examination by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed substantial damage to the fuselage and firewall. The wreckage was retained for further examination.
