NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident
On June 19, 2014, about 0820 Pacific daylight time, a Cessna 172RG airplane, N6091R, sustained substantial damage as a result of a runway overrun and subsequent impact with terrain and object after an aborted takeoff from Alturas Municipal Airport, Alturas, California. The pilot and pilot-rated passenger were not injured. The airplane was registered and operated by the pilot under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a local flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight and a flight plan was not filed.
During a postaccident interview, the pilot reported that during the takeoff roll, increased back pressure was put on the controls to keep the nose landing gear from shuttering. The pilot also noticed shortly after that the airplane's takeoff distance was longer than normal. After reaching the intersecting runways the pilot decided to abort the takeoff and apply brakes which resulted in a runway overrun. During the overrun the airplane collided with a ditch and fence resulting in a nose over and substantial damage to the wings and fuselage. The pilot further reported that the engine had about 3 hours since major overhaul.
The airplane was recovered to a secure hangar for further investigation.
