NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident
On August 16, 2014, about 1830 central daylight time, a Bellanca 7GCBC, N36236, operated by a private individual, was substantially damaged during a forced landing, after it experienced a total loss of engine power while maneuvering near Itta Bena, Mississippi. The flight instructor and a student pilot were seriously injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan had been filed for the flight that originated at the Greenwood-Leflore Airport, Greenwood, Mississippi, about 1800. The instructional flight was conducted under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91.
According to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector, the flight instructor and student pilot were practicing simulated forced landings, when the airplane experienced a sudden total loss of engine power. During the ensuing forced landing, the airplane struck the ground in a corn field, which resulted in substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage.
The airplane was equipped with a Lycoming O-320-A2B, 150-horsepower engine.
Initial examination of the airplane by an FAA inspector did not reveal any evidence of a catastrophic engine failure. Fuel sampled from the airplane's fuel tanks was consistent with 100-low-lead aviation gasoline and absent of contamination. The wreckage was retained for further examination to be performed at a later date.
