NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident
On August 19, 2014, about 1400 central daylight time, a kit-built Zenith STOL CH 750 airplane, collided with terrain while taking off from the East Kansas City Airport (3GV), Grain Valley, Missouri. The commercial pilot was seriously injured and the airplane was substantially damaged. The airplane was registered to and operated by a private individual under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight, which operated without a flight plan. The local flight was originating at the time of the accident.
According to information obtained by the responding Federal Aviation Administration inspector, the airplane had recently been certified and was flying within its Phase I Operating Limitations. The flight was about the sixth time the pilot had flown the airplane, having flown the airplane a total of 10 hours. While conducting touch and go landings the airplane was observed by witnesses to climb to about 100 feet above ground level before the airplane rolled to the right and quickly descended. The airplane collided with the ground and substantial damage was sustained to the airplane's fuselage and wings.
The airplane was retained for further examination.
