NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On September 22, 2014 about 1015 Alaska daylight time, a Cessna 206 airplane, N206J, sustained substantial damage during a forced landing following a total loss of engine power, about 14 miles east-northeast of Deadhorse, Alaska. The airplane was registered to 70 North LLC, Anchorage, Alaska, and operated under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 as an on-demand air taxi flight. The commercial pilot and the three passengers were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and company flight following procedures were in effect. The cross-country flight originated about 0920 from the Badami Airport, which is located about 29 miles east of Deadhorse. The accident flight was en route to Deadhorse. During a postaccident conversation with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator-in-charge, the accident pilot stated that shortly after departing from the Badami Airport, the engine began vibrating violently, and the throttle and propeller controls were unresponsive. He said that smoke soon filled the cabin area, which was followed by complete loss of engine power. Unable to restore engine power, the pilot selected a forced landing site on the tundra-covered terrain. During the forced landing, the airplane nosed over just after touchdown, and came to rest inverted. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage, wings, and empennage. The airplane was equipped with a Continental Motors IO-520 engine. A detailed NTSB examination of the engine is pending.
